Specialty sourcing / Sri Lanka

Ceylon cinnamon, specified from origin to finished pack.

For spice importers, food businesses and private-label brands, a useful cinnamon specification starts with identity and intended use. Kayilan helps define the requirement and coordinate supplier discussions, samples and document review.

Know the product

Species and origin answer different questions.

Ceylon cinnamon is Cinnamomum verum, also known by the synonym Cinnamomum zeylanicum. The species is native to Sri Lanka and cultivated elsewhere. Botanical identity alone does not establish Sri Lankan origin.

What a sample can show

Useful clues. Followed by evidence.

Ceylon quills

Typically formed from several thin, nested layers of bark, with a relatively delicate and fragile structure.

Cassia sticks

Typically have thicker, harder bark. These physical differences help screen a sample; they do not prove species or origin.

Sri Lanka EDB: comparing the quills

Ground cinnamon needs more than a visual check. Grinding removes the visible quill structure. Colour, aroma and photographs cannot reliably establish botanical identity, purity or country of origin.

Define the product format

Choose the form and grade together.

Sri Lanka's Department of Cinnamon Development grades quills by diameter, the number per kilogram and surface foxing. Agree the exact specification and assess a sample.

01

Whole or cut quills

Specify grade, diameter, cut length, appearance and packing protection.

02

Alba and C grades

Fine quill formats. Name the exact grade rather than relying on “premium”.

03

M and H grades

Coarser quill families with their own dimensional specifications.

04

Ground or crushed

Agree particle size, intended application, identity evidence and quality parameters.

Check the particular lot

Connect the offer, sample and shipment.

Agree the evidence needed before committing to an offer. Botanical identity and Sri Lankan origin should be verified separately.

01

Declare the identity

Request botanical name, plant part, product form, cultivation and processing country, and details of any blend.

02

Trace the lot

Connect supplier and processor records, origin documents, the sample and analysis reports to the same identifiable lot.

03

Resolve uncertainty

Arrange appropriate independent laboratory checks when needed, especially for powder. Confirm the method suits the product and the question being tested.

Laboratory methods have different capabilities and limitations. A botanical test does not by itself prove geographical origin.
